An Educational Campus
The new Cantonal School Fricktal in Stein is planned in an open landscape near the Rhine River. The project is among the canton’s largest public building investments, strengthening educational infrastructure in that region. The campus will accommodate around 1,000 students in 44 classes and 140 teachers. The new campus establishes an independent regional center for education. Architecturally, the building responds to its rural context. 

Three-story volumes with pitched roofs reference local agricultural buildings and break the large program into smaller segments structured by semi-open courtyards.

Forum, Learning Landscape, and Adaptable Structure
The program includes several teaching buildings, a quadruple sports hall, a mediatek, an assembly hall, and a 320-seat cafeteria. The architecture is organized around a central three-story forum that connects six learning clusters and forms the spatial and social heart of the school. Public functions open directly onto this space, allowing activities to extend into a shared internal landscape for exchange, events, and everyday school life.

The school is organized on three main floors, ensuring clarity and short internal distances. Science teaching occupies the first floor, while the top floor forms an interconnected learning landscape of six clusters linked by balconies and bridges overlooking the forum. Constructed as a timber–concrete hybrid, the building follows a low-tech, material-efficient approach. Its modular system allows future expansion and long-term adaptability.
